The first one was like a Tamagotchi game out of control, I mean you had to take the bloody thing to the bathroom even. The Digmon games on the other hand didn't bring too much to the table, granted I only played Digimon World 1 and 2. This mechanic is what made your honestly trained Pokemon curb stomp the ones people leveled with Rare Candy whoring. Beating say Machamp would yield increased Attack stats upon a level up while beating Alakazam would give more Speical Attack.
Ever heard of Effort Values? It's an underlying mechanic of Pokemon games distributing stats based on the Pokemon your Pokemon defeated. Pokemon has a nice combination of simplistic game play combined with robust and surprisingly in-depth RPG elements. Japanese shows do not seem to age well.Īs for the games Pokemon wins hands down. The shows were pretty okay I guess, I don't really remember any of it standing out all that well. Admittedly I did watch a lot more Digimon growing up but that was due to the fact that Pokemon came on earlier and I usually hadn't made it home from school by then.
